White gold jewelry is a mainstay of any great collection. You will find this element in nearly every style and form imaginable. White gold has maintained its popularity among those who are not very fond of the yellow hues in most gold jewelry. The material is also popular among those of us that do.

I am a big fan of the traditional yellow gold. When I think of jewelry this color immediately pops into my mind. However, my husband chose white gold jewelry for our engagement and I am thrilled with the ring as well as the other pieces in the collection. There is no way that I would want a yellow set now.

This comes as a surprise to those who know me and to me as well. I used to think that white gold jewelry was kind-of silly because items can be created out of sterling silver and platinum. I thought that they all looked the same. Why would anyone choose white gold jewelry when there are other less expensive options available that have the same look?

I used to think this before I owned white gold jewelry. There is no greater material to use with diamonds. The modest half carat diamond in the center of my engagement ring looks huge in the setting. The white gold that surrounds the gem sparkles reflectively and makes the diamond appear larger.

The gem also seems to have more shimmer than the versions with yellow gold settings. I’m not sure why this is exactly but I am definitely not complaining. I decided to find out more about my new favorite metal. The first place I looked was my local jeweler who gave me a lot of information.

It used to be that white gold jewelry was a mixture of gold and different elements specifically nickel. This made me frown but I guess that it doesn’t matter with such a beautiful design. The jeweler went on to explain that nickel isn’t really used now especially if the item is created by a professional.

Rhodium is the metal of quality and choice for today’s reputable jeweler. White gold jewelry is now created with a mixture of gold and rhodium. This metal is very similar to platinum and it does share its color but the overall look of the finished product is more reflective.

After my visit with the jeweler I knew that I was going to marry a very smart man. His choice of white gold jewelry went against everyone’s advice. He simply followed his intuition as well as his excellent taste.
